Are you prone to tooth decay? If so, our dentist in South Bend, IN, may recommend dental sealants to help reduce your risk of cavities. While dental sealants for children are more common, there’s no age limit on this procedure. Anyone can be a candidate for dental sealants, especially if you have deep grooves or divots on the chewing surfaces of your back teeth.

Here’s what else you need to know about the dental sealants procedure.

South Bend IN Dental Sealant Dentist

What Happens When I Get Dental Sealants?

First, we’ll need to thoroughly clean the teeth that we plan to seal. We’ll then dry the teeth and place cotton around them to keep them dry during the procedure. Next, our South Bend dentist will apply an acid solution to the chewing surfaces of your teeth. This roughens the teeth so they can create a strong, lasting bond with the sealant.

After a few moments, our dentist will rinse away the acid solution and dry the teeth. He’ll then paint the sealant onto the chewing surfaces of your teeth and use a curing light to harden it in place.

The dental sealants procedure takes one appointment, which makes it convenient for our patients with busy schedules.

How Long Do Dental Sealants Last?

Dental sealants have been known to last for up to 10 years when you practice good oral hygiene. During this time, we recommend that you continue seeing our dentist for routine teeth cleaning appointments. At these checkups, Dr. Kosek will be able to touch up or replace your tooth sealants as needed.
